2010: Another Year of CA WSF Helping Wild Sheep
2010 saw the California Chapter of the Wild Sheep Foundation continue our solid
history of providing funding and support for California’s wild mountain sheep. Thanks to the support of our membership in raising much
needed funds, CA WSF spent almost $28,000 on behalf of the wild sheep last year
as
follows:
• Education and Outreach - $2,333
• White Mountain Hunt Unit, GPS and Telemetry Collars, Aerial Monitoring -
$13,325
• California Outdoor Heritage Alliance - $5,000
• Washington State University, Disease Research - $1,500
• Chapter and Affiliates Meeting - $833
• Wire Strike Helicopter Safety Training - $877
• Sheep Summits - $2,276
• USA Shooting Team - $1,500
In addition to our financial commitments, CA WSF also contributed by providing
input, ideas and support to the California Department of Fish and Game. The
most visible success we had here in 2010 was in working with the department and
our friends at the Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep to get the
Cady Mountains and the South Bristol Mountains opened as new hunt zones for the
2011 – 2012 hunting season. We have provided considerable dollars for surveys of these
two units in the past and are delighted to see the units open. We expect
between five and seven new desert bighorn sheep tags to be made available in
these two units as a result!
